Success is a Choice
Yesterday I attended the second interview with the company that called me last Friday. As it turned out this was another sales position, similar to what I’m doing with selling cutlery except the target market are businesses, not individuals.
The interview (they called it a “bootcamp” but it really didn’t feel like one to me) involved me going on the road with the person who would decide by the end of the day whether or not I would fit in with the organization i.e. whether or not I had the right stuff to do job. It also allowed me to see what a typical day on the job looked like and I could determine if I could see myself doing it.
If there’s one thing that I have become very successful with it’s presenting well at interviews. Yesterday was no different. I am now two-for-two for interviews and I was offered the job. Go me! Actually I had a fun day that involved learning about what makes the difference between success and no success.
Success is a choice.
There are some definite perks about this job:
- it pays well
- it’s flexible and allows me to work when I want where I want
- i’ll be on the road a lot (more like on my feet) as I prospect and meet different business owners wherever I go
- I get to develop my rapport-building and sales skills
The not so desirable aspect of this job is that it works on 100% commission. I only get paid for conversions. So there is no security of a regular pay check, no base pay like a cushy retail or office job, but what may appear as a negative is actually a positive for me because this is a great opportunity for me to learn more about life and business. Had this been a year ago I would have definitely said no to this job but I have had a shift in thinking over the past.
I know somebody reading this may be thinking that I’m talking crazy. I’ve already had one friend tell me that I should give up the sales and get a job in a nice comfy project manager position similar to the one I had last year working for Corporate America. Yeah, great security I had with that one when they made me redundant back in March this year. I don’t harbour any bad thoughts about that situation actually, I was feeling stale and unchallenged and I wanted out. The universe was kind enough to speed it up for me and it all led to this moment right here, right now.
Sales is all about taking responsibility. Personal responsibility. It’s all about mindset and if you have known me for any amount of time over the past few years then you would know that I’m all about mindset. The financial and emotional rewards that I create are all dependent upon me and my beliefs. As I said to a friend on the phone the other day this is the first job that I’ve had where feedback is immediate. If I am not prepared and I am not confident in my own ability then there is no sale, and I don’t get paid. Simple. I take each experience as a learning and I look at how I can improve it.
As I learn and research more on how I can improve my results there is one consistent recurring theme throughout all this:
The race goes not always to the swift but the one that keeps on running.
Commitment and persistence are keys to success. Sticking with it even when it looks like the odds are against you, even when things are looking really bad. We must shift our focus and our energy and believe in what we can accomplish and visualise us already having achieved it.
Now I did want to also note here that I haven’t lost sight of my higher purpose and vision to make our world a better place and be a positive force on this planet. I’m still involved with YSEC. I’m just making sure that I have the basics covered whilst I continue to develop my strategy, make meaningful connections and grow. I figure, why not develop the skills that will help prepare me for what I need to do when it is time for me to do it?
I am my own experiment. Worse-case scenario I can always take up a minimum-wage job so that I can cover my rent and expenses whilst I work out my next plan.
I choose success. Just watch me. Training starts tomorrow.
