I heard of the Skype for iPhone launch a couple of weeks ago on CNET Reviews and I was pretty excited.

So imagine the feeling of disappointment I had when I searched the iPhone Apps Store and couldn’t find it. I asked my friend Tom in Melbourne (Australia) where he got it from during our Skype conversation yesterday because he was actually using it that call and there was no drop out and I heard him very clearly – absolutely fantastic!
Tom said he got it through the iPhone Apps Store. I followed his instructions and again I couldn’t find it. Something was up. So this morning I did some research.>/p>
I was greeted with shock when I discovered that Skype for iPhone App Launches–EXCEPT IN CANADA.
After the initial “WTF?!” followed by waves of emotion i.e. anger and then hopelessness (“WHYYYYYYYYYYY UNIVERSE WHYYYYYYY?!!”) and finally acceptance I figured “there must be a way” . After some searching I found that there was (anyone else able to hear that voice saying “where there is a will, there’s a way” right about now too?).
There’s actually two ways to do it. This article explains how to do it by using software called Jailbreak (essentially hacking the iPhone software – here’s a how-to guide if you’re interested) but I didn’t want to do that just yet until I better understood the benefits of “Jail breaking”. Another way is to simply grab a free iTunes account for another country i.e. one that’s NOT in Canada. I followed the steps outlined and it worked like a charm. Skype for iPhone app, which is free, is loaded, tested and working great! Well I haven’t placed a call yet but I know from my interaction with Tom that it works.
So happy iPhone Skyping folks!
