I heard of the Skype for iPhone launch a couple of weeks ago on CNET Reviews and I was pretty excited.

So imagine the feeling of disappointment I had when I searched the iPhone Apps Store and couldn’t find it. I asked my friend Tom in Melbourne (Australia) where he got it from during our Skype conversation yesterday because he was actually using it that call and there was no drop out and I heard him very clearly – absolutely fantastic!

Tom said he got it through the iPhone Apps Store. I followed his instructions and again I couldn’t find it. Something was up. So this morning I did some research.>/p>

I was greeted with shock when I discovered that Skype for iPhone App Launches–EXCEPT IN CANADA.

After the initial “WTF?!” followed by waves of emotion i.e. anger and then hopelessness (“WHYYYYYYYYYYY UNIVERSE WHYYYYYYY?!!”) and finally acceptance I figured “there must be a way” . After some searching I found that there was (anyone else able to hear that voice saying “where there is a will, there’s a way” right about now too?).

There’s actually two ways to do it. This article explains how to do it by using software called Jailbreak (essentially hacking the iPhone software – here’s a how-to guide if you’re interested) but I didn’t want to do that just yet until I better understood the benefits of “Jail breaking”. Another way is to simply grab a free iTunes account for another country i.e. one that’s NOT in Canada. I followed the steps outlined and it worked like a charm. Skype for iPhone app, which is free, is loaded, tested and working great! Well I haven’t placed a call yet but I know from my interaction with Tom that it works.

So happy iPhone Skyping folks!

  • Skype credit is a different thing. You can pay for Skype credit and call any regular cell or landline from skype at competitive rates.

Alternatively if the other person has a skype number (they have to buy one, also through skype) then you can call their skype number using your cell phone.

Using Skype on the iphone (with a free wifi connection) is similar to logging onto your pc at home. It's free to call another skype user.
  • But how can I get Skype credit to my phone if I don't have an iPhone? Is it possible??

YEAH, MAN, I HATE THIS "EXCEPT IN CANADA" CRAP!!!

I found out about Skype from your phone around 2 months ago, and I wanted to get ittttt ='(
  • You don't need to jailbreak to call your skype contacts; you can 'skype' with another application called Fring. It's been available since day 1.

Jailbreaking can allow you to use your iPHone as a modem. It also gives you access to way more applications that aren't available in the Apple store or even features on the iPhone. ie. cut and paste was available on a jailbroken phone long before Apple implemented it.
