Cs’r Steph M and I went on the Steam Whistle Brewer tour today.

“Learn how Canada’s Premium Pilsner is made, meet our friendly staff and enjoy a sample of our beer. You’ll learn why Steam Whistle was designated one of Toronto’s “green buildings” and about our railway history. Our tours will educate and entertain!”

I’m not so sure how much I learnt about the brewing process but I got some beer samples alright, and I scored a bottle opener and a sample glass! My taste buds don’t agree with the Steam Whistle flavour too well but that didn’t stop me getting my $8 worth.

What I *did* learn was that SW Pilsener is an all-natural beer with no added preservatives, and as such it has a three-month shelf life before the quality and flavour starts to degrade.

Also, there’s a 10-story carpark underneath the site where the brewery is located. How ’bout that?

  • Hi there - glad to hear that you enjoyed your tour of the brewery. I just wanted to write and let you know that our all natural beer has a shelf life of 3 months, not three hours. The long cold aging provides a decent amount of product stability as well as the 3 stages of filtration (DE, sterile pad filters and absolute filtration). When we package our beer (bottles or cans) we always test to minimize O2 pickup, as that is what makes beer go prematurely stale. Our fully enclosed packaging provides protection from damaging light. The best way to store beer is in a dark, cool place and that helps to extend the shelf life past 3 months. I hope this helps. :-)
  • Hi Sybil, my bad. You are right.. it's 3 months, not hours. Post updated! Thanks for the info and for visiting!
