‘Blue Monday’ or ‘Mondayitis’ or “having a case of the Mondays” is a feeling of weariness and apathy that some workers express when starting the work week on Monday. — Wikipedia
This is a scene from the streetcar ride this morning. It’s a cold winter’s morning and from the expressions of some of the passengers’ faces it doesn’t look like they’re enjoying the peak hour rush to the office too much. I boarded the street car on King St W and it was packed. There were about ten or fifteen people who were left waiting for the next street car because the one I hopped on was just too full.
It reminded me of the days when I worked in the city in Sydney (circa 2000) and had to board the train early in the morning during winter. Comparably the winter in Sydney is nothing compared to the winter in Toronto, but I still recall standing on the platform shivering some days. Of course now I have a totally different perspective on cold i.e. I’ll take a “cold” morning in Sydney over a cold morning in Toronto any day!
My home phone line died for the second time in a week (thank you Rogers!) so I was forced to come into the office for the first time in a long time. I received a memo from work last week to confirm that the office at 901 King St West (the one I’ve been using as my unofficial base here in Toronto) is being shut down by April 30th. So I guess I’ll be permanently working from home from that point forward. Technically-speaking, I’ve been working out of home since November anyway so there’s no real impact to my current work arrangements. It just means that I’ll have to go to the Spectrum Way office in Mississauga to do any printing… yeah, right!
So I’m sipping on my large caramel corretto whilst munching on the remainder of my banana choc-chip muffin from Second Cup as I type this. Ah, almost makes the trek to work this morning worthwhile. Yes, doesn’t take much to please this reporter.
Oh and I just recently discovered that Monday Feb 18th is a public holiday in Ontario. It’s Family Day! Yes, I thought that it was a joke too (I’ve never heard of such a thing in Sydney) but it’s actually not.
Many employees will get the day off with public holiday pay on Family Day on Monday, February 18, 2008. Family Day is one of nine public holidays under Ontario’s Employment Standards Act, 2000. (Source: Ontario Ministry of Labour)
Now back to work (or pretending like I’m working would be a more accurate description).
