The first night
So this is what it feels like to live alone…
I must admit it’s been a long long time since I spent a Saturday night home alone, so without somebody to chat with and no internet I turned to the trusty television (and Rogers cable TV) for comfort.
Rewind…
Realising around 3pm that if I didn’t go out and purchase some food I’d be starving for the rest of the day and night I headed down the road to a busy Queen Street. I found a cool pizza joint called Mamma’s Pizza at 2118 Queen Street East. For $2.95 CAD I got a large slice of pepperoni pizza. It was fresh and tasted so much better than the slice I got a Pizza Pizza in Los Angeles Airport a week ago.
I had written down a list of things that I needed to buy and to my surprise was able to find a lot of them in a bargain store which had a lower level that I stumbled upon. For around $16 CAD I was able to pick up a body sponge, dish washing liquid, a drying rack for the kitchen sink where I could place my washed plates and cutlery (it’s missing a tray underneath to collect water so I’ll have to find one), two boxes of tissue paper, and a scourer. Bargain!
I then crossed Queen St and purchased a bottle of Canadian wine (can’t remember the brand right now) and a six pack of Steam Whistle Pilsner (I figure I should give this local brew a go), before heading to IGA to buy some apples and a lean cuisine microwave dinner. You guessed it, the lean cuisine would be my (rather tasteless) dinner for the evening!
I returned home, sat on the couch and waited for the Rogers installation guy to show up and install the phone line. The appointment was scheduled for between 2pm – 5pm. At 7pm I figured that I better call Rogers to see where the heck he was.
I fired up my laptop and discovered that somebody nearby had left their wireless internet unsecured. Score baby! Actually, I debated (with myself) whether or not I should use it for a few minutes before finally giving in to the dark side. Well I needed to make that call to Rogers and I had to access my gmail in order to get the number!
After being disconnected whilst waiting on the queue the first time, I was connected to the support desk the second time. Rogers informed me that the tech had come to the house and knocked but nobody was home. Doh!! So I rescheduled the installation for Monday 11am – 2pm.
Suddenly I heard a “bink” coming from my notebook. It was the sound of my friend Chi (in Sydney) messaging me through gmail. For the next 20-30 minutes we updated each other on “the goss” and it was great to be able to catch up, even if it was through the net and not over a drink at a bar.
I heated up my lean cuisine and after slowly finishing the tasteless dinner my stomach was still screaming “Hungry!”. I think somebody forgot to include the flavour when they created the Lean Cuisine. I really do need to stock up with food real soon. I also need to procure a rice cooker, an essential item for any true Asian. Of course I’ll have to work out where I can buy one. I’m guessing China Town would be a good place to start. If only I knew where that was… bring on Google!
The rest of the night was spent back on the couch watching Forrest Gump until 3am. I felt more comfortable on the couch with the lamp and TV running and for a few hours avoided sleeping in room on the bed. At 3am, barely able to keep my eyes open, I dragged myself to the bed, pulled the quilt over me, closed my eyes and crashed. This was immediately after momentarily fighting off negative thoughts of scary things happening me that were running crazily through my mind (where did these thoughts come from?).
I also detected the smell of cigarette smoke on the bed sheets (this caused my clothes to smell the same when I woke up the next morning – yuck!). I was too tired at that point to care.
So all in all it was a great first night in my own place, getting acquainted with the solitude and quiet surroundings. Besides the sound emulating from the TV the only other voices speaking were those inside of my head. I guess I’ve got to get used to those sooner or later so why not start straight away right?
