I caught the “Comedy Gold” show in Parramatta earlier tonight with a few friends. The show featured Tahir (Lord of the Kebabs), Anh Do and Triple J’s The Sandman (aka Steve Abbott). It was great, and there were plenty of laughs to be had.

Anh Do came out first and was an absolute crack-up. It was the first time that I’d seen him perform and I was in hysterics. The Sandman followed (in character) and did a decent job of keeping the crowd entertained. Then Tahir made a grand entrance and jumped straight into it. I later discovered that he had flown in from somewhere, performed a gig at the airport for Canteen, and then made his way to the Roxy. Tomorrow he’s scheduled to fly back to the location that he’d come from earlier today! Life’s busy for a stand up comedian.

The funniest moments of the show included unscripted incidents like when an audience member who was seated on the stage (yes it was weird but that’s where a whole group of people were sitting) nearly fell off the stage as she was heading towards the restrooms. There were also the three girls sitting on the right side of the stage that kept giggling throughout most of Tahir’s performance, who became victim to Tahir’s improve. One or two of them were studying welfare so Tahir took the opportunity to play on that several times throughout his performance.

I caught up with Tahir for a few mins after the show and he still recognized me from when he once taught me in high school. He even talked about his teaching experience (teasing a couple of New Zealand girls who also happened to be primary school teachers) in his act. Tahir was just as I remembered him back in high school ie. vibrant, never taking life seriously, yet socially responsible (he closed off his act with a serious message about not taking life too seriously — good on you Tahir). When I was speaking to him there were no signs of fame getting to his head, which is just great.

Anyways, Tahir has an upcoming show at Club Marconi so if anyone is in the area and is up for a night of laughs I’d recommend them go check him out. Refer to his website (www.tahir.com.au) for other tour locations and dates, as well as vids of his past footy show performance. Tahir also has a myspace site but don’t expect much from it - he’s trying to make it the most boring myspace site online and I think he’s succeeding.

Anh Do will be appearing on Spicks and Specks soon, and doing lots of other stuff that I can’t remember. Keep an eye out for this talented person. Refer here for an interview with Anh.
