ok after comparing several funds I decided on going with NRMA (reseller of MBF). Bit more pricey than the rest but some additional benefits that might come in handy one day.
a couple useful sites that I came across…
- Health Insurance Australia; and
- iSelect. Free service to help select a fund. Those in Victoria can get a free membership card that offers discounts at various retail outlets, cinemas, restaurants, etc. which is cool.
- medicare levy
- federal government 30% rebate

i wonder if you’ll bother scrolling backwards to find this comment? i’m actually in the process of looking for a health fund myself. just out of curiousity - what did you mean by nrma being a reseller of mbf? from what i can see, mbf has different plan options to nrma…
*confused*

ok so this is how it works… nrma sell mbf health. what nrma do is add a few extra benefits and bump up the price a little, so what the consumer gets is mbf insurance plus some nrma features on top. so nrma are reselling health packages that they buy off mbf. it’s actually mbf that provide the basic insurance.
are we confused yet?
i guess the question you need to ask is - are you better off buying direct from mbf or do you want those lil extras that nrma offer as well (for the additional cost)? i recommend going to both sites and comparing the packages, and then deciding which you actually need.

Thanks for the clarification.
I also took a look at medicare private, and mbf and i’m so tempted to just take extras cover. I was actually told be medicare it wasn’t worth me buying hospital cover until I turned 30.
I’m a little freaked out by mbf though - because if i’m reading it right - i can get extras health care cover for 6 bucks a fortnight.
..i thought private health insurance was sposed to be expensive?!

$6/fortnight is about right for extras cover. It’s when you add in hospital cover that you end up looking at least $40 a month.
If you’re single and you earn over $50K - getting health insurance will actually save you money cos you don’t have to pay Medicare Levy Surcharge!

Dammit. Maybe I should try harder at convincing the powers that be that I deserve a decent payrise.
